“Construct a fort and fill it with what you love!”
“I referred to the structures as forts because I wanted people to begin thinking about concentrating their space and about self-containment, and forts are the first private spaces that most people create for themselves. I was deliberately vague in saying “fill it with what you love” so that I wouldn’t pre-determine what they incorporated. Nevertheless, trends quickly emerged – many people included books, photographs, computers, letters. Objects. The arrangement of the objects, as well as the particular ones chosen, reveals something about each person, as does the way the subjects pose in their forts.
Through how people interpreted and fulfilled these simple instructions, I was able to begin to discover some truths about how we arrange our bodies for presentation, what we want to be surrounded by, and what kinds of space we want to inhabit. In fact, I soon found myself bearing witness to the overwhelming need to own and display things that the subjects revealed. This excessiveness made me start to question whether these structures and objects speak more about our actual personalities or about how we wish to present ourselves to the world. Where is the line drawn? ” – K. Burgess
