Deplaziert – Zebrastreifen auf Abwegen

Wenn man eine der markantesten Regelsymbole die die verkehrstüchtige Gegenwart kennt, den Zebrastreifen, in Umgebungen plaziert, die dessen Regel ad absurdum führen, obwohl diese Orte tatsächlich auch mit dem Begriff Reisen und Fortbewegung in Zusammenhang stehen, tauchen die Fragen von ganz allein auf. Das dachten sich Donna Wearsmouth und Simon Walvin – beide Designstudenten an der Universität von Northumbria (Newcastle), als sie das, nach einer Designintervention in der Umgebung verlangendem, Semesterprojekt gemeinsam in Angriff nahmen und eher ländliche Gegenden mit wenigen weißen Blockstreifen zu einem städtischen Credo verhalfen.

Brief / A Design Intervention — Create rules within an environment.

Solution / “Where does the limitations on rules end” or “how can we place rules into an environment where rules should not appear to exist.” We considered rules which have already been placed into an environment, developing an instantly recognisable theme, road markings. However, the location in which we placed these would be the interventions.

Zebra Crossing — a bold, clear pattern that could be easily applied to the surface. The location had to be based on what would deliver the most impact in a way where the viewer could not feasibly use the zebra crossing; overall creating questions. When looked at as a series, the message is clearly reflected. From right to left, scenery changes from a rural landscape to an urban / city scape. It could be seen as a change in time from when rules were very sparse in a day–to–day travel to now, where rules are seen around us and everyday we pass by or through them subconsciously acting upon them.
